The George Best Foundation has started a very small but simple project of supporting sport in remote parts of the world. In this example a group of 10 Port Talbot based sponsors have donated 5 UK pounds each to buy children footballs. After collecting 50 pounds a Western Union payment was sent to a trusted aid worker in General Santos, Philippines. With the payment there was enough money to buy the required 10 footballs, also a marker pen and a phone dongle credit to send back the photos. The news was even better than expected. 50 pounds converted to 3,400 pesos and after all expenses there was still 1,000 pesos left which was given to supplement the teachers wages of about 150 pesos a day.
JULY 15th 2011. The footballs were bought in a sale at a sports shop in General Santos. It was a very hard task finding an almost plain football but the result was quite good as you see.In the first photo we see Prian Bagcatin who had the task of marking each football with the letters that make up GEORGE BEST. Didn't he do a fantastic job.
Next day the footballs were taken to a kindergarten school for children aged 4-6yrs of age. Their afternoon learning was a bit different,as they sat all full of excitement hearing the most basic information about the game of football. "No handling just kicking" , and how to score a goal. Next they stood holding the footballs to show the sponsors back in the Uk that their support had successfully reached its destination.
The footballs were sponsored as follows;- (To be checked out)
